Artwork description
Print on canvas mounted on wooden frame from the original artwork “Hera Lacinia”. The artwork represents the divinity Hera in the sense of “Lacinia”, in relation to the famous sanctuary erected in honor of the Goddess in the archaeological area of Capo Colonna in Crotone, South Italy. The painting, like all the works belonging to the painting collection”Italica” that draws inspiration from archaeological finds of antiquity, is inspired by the discovery in the Heraion of Argos of a head of Hera attributed to the school of Polykleitos and dating back to the fifth century B.C. The find attests to the spread of the cult of Hera venerated as protectress of pastures, marriage and fertility in Ancient and Magna Greece since the Archaic Age, penetrated successively also to Rome and in the rest of the Italic peninsula with the name of Juno. The toponym of “Lacinia” refers to the artist’s provenance and it represents a tribute to the productions of colonial art resulting from contacts between Greeks and indigenous native populations.
The plasticism of the image and the sculptural coldness of the gaze characterize this face with a severe character and a hieratic expression.
